A single meal prep container is a solved problem — the actual challenge is having enough of them that laundry day for containers doesn't happen mid-week. Buying a real set up front, instead of a random one bought at a grocery store checkout, ends up cheaper per container and holds up a lot longer.
Every pick started from independent testing and expert roundups, then got checked against its own real purchase and review history before making the list — seal quality and how it holds up in a dishwasher matter more here than anything on the box.

Enough pieces in enough sizes to cover a full week of lunches without ever running out clean, and the crystal-clear Tritan plastic actually stays clear instead of clouding over after a few dozen dishwasher cycles. The snap-lock lids are genuinely leakproof, not just leak-resistant.
Pyrex has been making this exact kind of container for decades, and the borosilicate glass still handles oven, microwave, and freezer without staining or holding onto smells the way plastic eventually does. The lids are the simple flat kind — less airtight than a locking system, but easier to clean.
The silicone gasket in the lid is the best seal of any set here, which matters most for anything liquid — soup, dressing-tossed salads, marinated meat. It costs more per container than the bulk sets, which is the tradeoff for the better seal.
Simpler snap lids instead of Brilliance's locking system, and noticeably cheaper per container as a result. A reasonable choice for anyone who just needs a stack of reliable containers without paying for the premium seal.
Glad's whole reputation is built on being fine to lose — cheap enough that leaving one at the office or letting a friend take home leftovers in it doesn't sting. A mixed set of sizes covers most meal shapes without any single container costing much to replace.
A locking, snap-tab lid seals better than a simple flat lid, but it also has more crevices to clean — worth it for liquids, overkill for dry snacks. Glass survives more reheating cycles without warping or staining than plastic, but it's heavier and can crack if dropped, so it's a better fit for a kitchen shelf than a bag carried to work daily. Buying one brand's full size range at once means lids are interchangeable across containers, which matters more day to day than it sounds like it would.
