A phone speaker is fine until you're thirty feet from it on a blanket, or it's face-down in a beach bag, or someone's cannonballing nearby. Outdoor gatherings need something built for the outdoors: real waterproofing, real battery life, and enough volume to fill a backyard without distorting.
These five hold up whether you're at the beach, the campsite, or just refusing to bring a speaker cord to a backyard barbecue. We ranked them on sound quality, waterproofing, and battery life, with an eye toward brands that actually back up their warranties.

This is the speaker most people picture when they think 'portable Bluetooth speaker,' and the reputation holds up. It pushes genuinely full, room-filling sound with real bass response, runs about 20 hours on a charge, and its IP67 rating means sand and pool splashes aren't a concern. The built-in power bank feature, which lets it charge your phone in a pinch, is a small bonus that ends up mattering more than expected.
Bose tuned this one with a proprietary bass port that makes a speaker this compact sound noticeably deeper than its size suggests, without the muddiness cheaper speakers get when they try to fake bass. It's IP67 waterproof and dustproof, floats if it goes in the pool, and its 12-hour battery is on the shorter side of this list, so it's better suited to an afternoon than an all-day campout.
This one is built to be dropped in a cooler, buried in sand, or knocked into the pool without a second thought. It floats, projects sound in a full 360 degrees so it doesn't matter which way it's facing, and its rugged little shell has survived rougher treatment than any speaker this size should. The tradeoff is a smaller sound stage than the bigger picks here, so it's better for a cooler-side soundtrack than powering a whole backyard party.
At 80 watts, this is the loudest speaker on this list by a wide margin, with a dedicated bass mode for anyone who wants their backyard to feel like it has a subwoofer. It's IPX7 waterproof, floats, and runs up to 24 hours, though the built-in RGB light ring is more of a party-trick extra than something you'll use every time.
The built-in carabiner clip is the whole pitch here: hook it to a backpack, a beach bag, or a belt loop and forget it's there until you need it. Sound is surprisingly punchy for something this small, though at 10 hours of battery and a smaller driver, it's meant to be a personal soundtrack rather than the speaker carrying a whole gathering.
Look for an IP rating of at least IPX5 for splash resistance, or IP67 if you want it to survive a full dunk. Battery life claims are usually measured at 50% volume, so expect a few hours less if you're actually filling a backyard. If you want fuller stereo sound, check whether a pair of speakers can be linked together before you buy just one.
