A video doorbell earns its keep long before a package thief ever shows up — it's the difference between guessing who rang and actually seeing them, at 2pm or 2am. The five below split mostly on one real tradeoff: whether you're fine paying a monthly fee to store footage in the cloud, or want a doorbell that keeps recordings local and skips the subscription entirely.
Every pick here has enough real purchase history to prove the app doesn't fall apart after the first firmware update — a common failure point for smart home gear that looks fine in a five-minute demo and frustrating a month in.

Ring remains the name most people already associate with video doorbells, and the newest Battery Doorbell is the reason why — easy battery-only install with no wiring required, a 2K image that's sharp enough to read a package label, and the widest third-party integration of anything on this list, from Alexa routines to third-party alarm panels.
The wired Nest Doorbell trades battery swaps for a permanent connection, and adds the kind of on-device intelligence that separates a passing car from an actual person at the door without waiting on a subscription to do it. It's the natural pick for anyone already living inside Google's smart home ecosystem.
Eufy has built its whole home security line around local storage, and the E340 is the clearest example — footage saves to onboard memory instead of a cloud plan, so there's no recurring fee to keep recordings after the fact. The dual-camera setup also cuts down on the false alerts a single wide-angle lens tends to generate from passing cars.
Blink is Amazon's own budget smart-home brand, and this doorbell is where that shows up in a good way — a two-year battery life that means genuinely forgetting about it, not just marketing copy, and a price that makes it easy to add a second unit at a side or back door.
Arlo undercuts the rest of this list on price while still delivering a full 2K head-to-toe view, which is normally the feature that pushes a doorbell into a higher tier. It's a fair trade-off pick for a rental or a second home where a premium doorbell doesn't make sense.
Battery versus wired is mostly a question of your existing doorbell wiring, not a quality difference — wired means no recharging, but only works if there's already low-voltage wiring at the door. Cloud subscriptions unlock features like person/package detection and extended video history on most of these brands, so check what's actually free before assuming the sticker price is the full cost. And field of view matters more than resolution for actually identifying someone — a head-to-toe wide-angle lens catches a face and a porch package in the same frame, while a narrower lens can miss both.
