A robot vacuum in a small apartment has a different job than one in a house — there's less floor to cover, but also less room to store a bulky dock, and a lot more furniture to get stuck under. The picks below lean toward compact, quiet models that don't need a dedicated corner of a studio to live in.
Every pick started from independent testing and expert roundups, then got checked against its own purchase and review history before making the list — a model doesn't make the cut just because a review site liked one unit in a lab.

iRobot basically invented this category, and the current entry-level Roomba is proof they haven't lost the plot — LiDAR navigation and real power-lifting suction for less than most competitors charge for a mid-tier model. It cleans in tidy rows instead of wandering randomly, which matters more in a small space where inefficient paths mean repeat passes over the same rug.
At just 2.85 inches tall, this is the pick least likely to get stuck under a bed frame or a low couch — a real problem in an apartment where furniture is often chosen for the space it saves, not for vacuum clearance. The self-emptying base runs up to 8 weeks between manual dumps.
10,000Pa of suction and a detachable mopping pad in one machine, for less than a lot of vacuum-only models cost. The dual anti-tangle system is a real upgrade for anyone with long hair or a shedding pet — the brushroll is the first thing to fail on cheaper robot vacuums.
Self-emptying docks used to be a $500+ feature; this one gets it under $250 without cutting the navigation smarts that make a robot vacuum worth having in the first place. LiDAR mapping and a 97%+ dust pickup rate on the spec sheet held up in independent testing, not just in the marketing copy.
Shark's mopping robot adds sonic scrubbing and edge-cleaning brushes that reach into corners a round vacuum usually misses — genuinely useful in a small kitchen where spills tend to happen right against the cabinet base. The 30-day self-empty HEPA base is the largest capacity on this list.
Suction rating (Pa) gets most of the marketing attention, but navigation quality matters more in a small, furniture-dense space — a robot that maps the room instead of bumping around randomly finishes faster and gets stuck less. A self-emptying dock is worth the counter or floor space it takes up if the alternative is manually dumping a bin every other day; skip it if storage is already tight. Mopping attachments are a nice bonus, not a replacement for an actual mop on anything more than light dust.

"The real luxury isn't the vacuum. It's never having to get on your knees to find the dust bunny under the couch."
