A portable power station won't run a whole house through a multi-day outage, but it will keep a fridge cold for a few hours, a phone charged, and a CPAP or medical device running through the night — which covers most of what actually matters in a short-term blackout. The five below range from a compact unit that fits in a closet to one large enough to genuinely count as home backup.
All five use LiFePO4 battery chemistry, which holds up over far more charge cycles than the older lithium-ion packs in cheaper units — worth knowing since this is exactly the kind of purchase people make once and expect to still work five years later. Every capacity and output figure below comes straight from the manufacturer's own listing, not a marketing estimate.

Jackery is the name with the longest track record in this category on Amazon, and the Explorer 1000 v2 is the clearest example why — a 1,070Wh LiFePO4 battery, 1,500W continuous output, and a listed 1-hour full recharge time. It's sized to run a fridge for several hours or keep several devices going for a full day, without the bulk or price of the largest units on this list.
At 256Wh and 300W output, this is built for keeping phones, a router, and small electronics running rather than a fridge — but that smaller size means it's light enough to keep in a closet or a car without a second thought. EcoFlow lists a 1-hour full recharge time even at this size.
Anker lists a 58-minute full recharge time on the C1000's 1,056Wh battery, among the fastest at this capacity — useful for topping it back up between waves of an extended outage, or ahead of a storm with only a short warning window. Rated output is 1,800W continuous with a 2,400W peak.
Four separate 1,800W AC outlets (2,700W peak combined) mean this can run several plugged-in devices at once without a power strip, which matters more than raw capacity when an outage means juggling a fridge, a lamp, and a phone charger from one unit. The 1,152Wh battery is the largest of the mid-tier picks here.
At 2,048Wh and 2,400W continuous output, this is the only unit on this list with enough capacity to run a fridge for the better part of a day, not just a few hours — the tradeoff is a higher price and more weight to move around. It's the pick for a multi-day outage rather than an overnight one.
Watt-hours (Wh) tell you how much total energy is stored, while watts (W) tell you the maximum a unit can output at once — a device with a high wattage rating (like most refrigerators on startup) needs a power station rated to handle that surge, not just enough total capacity. LiFePO4 batteries are rated for thousands of charge cycles versus a few hundred for older lithium-ion packs, which is the main reason the units above cost more than a similarly sized generic power bank. And if you're running anything medically necessary, check that device's exact power draw against the station's rated output and battery capacity before relying on it — manufacturer specs, not estimates, should be the basis for that decision.
