An e-reader still isn't going to feel like a real book, and it doesn't need to — what it actually replaces is the stack of paperbacks on a nightstand and the phone screen people default to in bed instead. A glare-free E Ink display reads better in direct sunlight than any phone or tablet, and a battery that lasts weeks instead of hours means it's actually gone when you need it far less often.
The five below split mostly on storage, screen size, and ecosystem — whether you want the cheapest way in, a stylus for notes, or a device built around library borrowing instead of buying every book new. Every one has real purchase history behind it, which matters for a device people expect to use daily for years, not months.

Amazon's Paperwhite line has been the default e-reader recommendation for years, and the newest version is the reason why — a 7-inch glare-free display, weeks of battery life, and enough storage for thousands of books. It's the safest default if you're not sure yet what you actually want from an e-reader.
The base Kindle strips out the Paperwhite's larger screen and auto-adjusting light, but keeps the core reading experience intact at a noticeably lower price. It's the lightest and most compact Kindle currently sold, which matters if the plan is to actually carry it around rather than leave it on a nightstand.
Same core reading experience as the standard Paperwhite, with wireless charging and a light that adjusts to the room automatically instead of needing to be set by hand. The extra storage mostly matters if audiobooks are part of the plan, since those take up far more space than text alone.
A 10.2-inch display and a pressure-sensitive pen turn this into something closer to a digital notebook that happens to also be an e-reader — useful for marking up PDFs, journaling, or taking notes alongside what you're reading. It's the most expensive device here by a wide margin, and it's solving a different problem than the others.
Kobo's biggest practical advantage over a Kindle is native support for library apps and standard ePub files, so borrowed library books work without the workarounds a Kindle sometimes needs. The 6-inch waterproof design is a fair trade for going outside Amazon's ecosystem.
Storage only matters as much as your library does — text-only books take up almost no space, so 8-16GB covers thousands of them, and the larger storage tiers are really there for audiobooks or heavy PDF use. A warm, adjustable front light matters more for night reading than screen resolution does, since it's the difference between a harsh blue-white glow and something that doesn't wake up a partner. And waterproofing is worth checking if reading in a bath or by a pool is part of the plan — not every model at every price point has it.
